More Closures Coming to Busy Surrey Highway for SkyTrain Construction

SURREY, B.C. — Drivers travelling along Fraser Highway in Surrey are facing more traffic disruptions as construction crews continue building the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension.

New traffic restrictions are scheduled across the corridor as crews work on guideway columns, stations, utilities and other infrastructure for the 16-kilometre extension. The project runs from King George Station in Surrey to Langley City Centre and is scheduled to begin service in late 2029.

According to the project's latest traffic advisory, several new closures and access changes are planned between 138 Street and 203 Street.

In the western section of the project, there will be no vehicle access to 162 Street north of Fraser Highway as crews carry out road restoration work. The restriction is in effect around the clock.

Farther east, access to 182 Street south of Fraser Highway is also being affected by construction. The project team said the work is connected to the installation of utilities for future traffic signals.

At Fraser Highway and 184 Street, drivers and pedestrians can also expect traffic pattern changes as crews install utilities near the future Hillcrest–184 Street SkyTrain station.

The disruptions are part of increasingly visible construction along the corridor. Most of the guideway columns have now been built, while crews continue installing elevated guideway sections and constructing the eight future stations.

The project currently has single-lane traffic in effect around much of the Fraser Highway corridor, along with additional lane closures and pedestrian and cyclist detours. The project website says access remains open to businesses, services and residential areas along Fraser Highway and Industrial Avenue.

More closures are also planned farther east toward Langley. The latest notices include temporary restrictions around 188 Street, Willowbrook Drive and 196 Street, as well as work at Industrial Avenue and 203 Street.

The traffic disruptions are expected to continue as crews move large sections of the elevated guideway into place. Overnight traffic stoppages between 168 Street and 184 Street are also scheduled to continue through late September.

For commuters, the construction means longer travel times and changing routes are likely to remain a regular part of travelling through the Fraser Highway corridor.

Once complete, the SkyTrain extension will add eight stations between Surrey and Langley. The provincial government says the trip between Langley City Centre and King George Station will take approximately 22 minutes.

Construction is expected to continue through 2029, meaning additional traffic changes and closures will be required as the project moves into its next stages.
